Bede and the Bird (parchment drawing with wash)

            £400   (89x59 cm)
This wash drawing interprets the passage from Bede's writing in his Ecclesiastic History of Britain which describes a bird which flies into a Great man's Hall. It flies around in the light, warmth for a while and then out into the dark and cold forever; such, Bede says, is our own passage through life.
The two monastic buildings show St Peter's, Wearmouth

and St Paul's, Jarrow. At the bottom of the drawing there is a reference to the Lindisfarne Gospels.
