Clark has never thought of himself as a print maker but rather as a painter
who produces etchings.
For Clark it is the great painters - Rembrandt, Goya, Picasso, Matisse and Chagall - who have been the supreme exponents of etching.
His own method is to draw directly onto the etching plate and not to 'proof' the work at intermediate stages but to carry the drawing right to its conclusion (despite the risk of mistakes this entails) before making a print.
In this way nothing intervenes between subject matter and 'pure' representation.
